Sports Grant
The sports premium grant is provided jointly by the departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport and is given to schools to improve provision of Physical Education (P.E.) and sport in primary schools. Primary schools receive a lump sum of money, plus an amount based on the number of pupils in the school.
At TMBSS, we believe that offering children a wide range of high-quality experiences is very important; this can highlight hidden talents and interests and also enable students to participate in activities which may not ordinarily be accessible to them.
2024/25
Last year TMBSS Primary had £3000 Sports Grant.
This level of funding enabled us to offer the KS2 six-day provision group three bespoke outdoor adventure sessions with Arthog Outreach. These included caving, canoeing and rock climbing, all of which were new experiences for our young people. Due to the size of the group and the skills of the specialist staff all students, regardless of their additional needs, were able to participate successfully.
In addition, we used some of the funding to purchase new PE equipment to ensure all students have access to their own equipment during PE sessions. This is important due to the needs of our students. We also held an internal sports competition and we were able to reward the students with medals, which they wore with pride.
Impact of the Funding
The Arthog Outreach sessions were highlights of the year for both staff and pupils. The experiences highlighted a range of fears, lack of resilience for some students, the need to overcome barriers around trying an activity for the first time but it also highlighted the empathetic side to many of the students and they oozed a sense of sportsmanship and pride. All students, and staff, achieved so much more than they ever thought, and all came away with a shared sense of achievement to be proud of.
The internal sports competition is a challenge for many of our students as they learn to win and lose graciously; this is an important lesson.
2025/2026
This year it is predicted that TMBSS Primary will have £3000 Sports Grant.
We will use some of the funding to continue to offer the Arthog Outreach sessions. In addition, we are setting up a remote swim school for two weeks in the spring term. The aim being that all students will get a minimum of eight small group lessons on an intensive swimming programme. Many of our students do not access swimming in their mainstream schools due to their behaviour presenting as high risk; we want to ensure all students attending with us at that time have access.
Swimming
We did not offer swimming teaching to our students in the academic year 2024/2025 due to the change in the commissioned model set by the Local Authority and the complications this caused in forward planning for an unknown cohort of students.
In 2025/2026 we will offer swimming to all students on roll at that time and will then be able to report on the swimming achievements for our Year 6 cohort.
