Sports Grant
PE AND SPORT PREMIUM
The PE and Sport Premium is provided by the Department for Education and other government departments to improve the provision of Physical Education (PE) and sport in primary schools. Primary schools receive a lump sum of funding, together with an amount based on the number of pupils in the school.
At TMBSS, we believe that offering children a wide range of high-quality experiences is extremely important. These experiences can highlight hidden talents and interests, develop confidence and resilience, and enable pupils to participate in activities which may not ordinarily be accessible to them.
2025/2026 FUNDING
TMBSS Primary received £5,000 of PE and Sport Premium funding during the 2025/2026 academic year.
The funding was used to provide an intensive two-week swimming programme for all primary pupils, an overnight residential outdoor-adventure experience for pupils in the KS2 six-day provision group, and a bespoke outdoor-adventure caving session delivered by Arthog Outreach.
The total expenditure was £5,004. Of this, £5,000 was funded through the PE and Sport Premium, with the additional £4 met by the school.
Swimming programme – £4,300
The majority of the funding was used to provide an intensive two-week swimming programme for all primary pupils through the Pools to Schools scheme.
KS2 outdoor-adventure residential – £444
Funding was used towards an overnight residential at a local outdoor-activity centre for pupils in the KS2 six-day provision.
Arthog Outreach caving session – £260
Funding was also used to provide a bespoke outdoor-adventure caving session with Arthog Outreach for pupils in the KS2 six-day provision.
IMPACT OF FUNDING
The funding enabled every primary pupil to access a unique, intensive swimming programme over a two-week period during the spring term of 2025/2026.
We utilised the 'Pools to Schools' scheme, with the swimming pool sited on the school playground. This enabled pupils to access swimming on site without the additional costs, logistical challenges and potential barriers associated with travelling to a local sports centre.
The frequency and consistency of the sessions, together with the familiarity of the school environment, had a particularly positive impact on our pupils, many of whom have additional needs. All pupils made progress from their individual starting points. For some, this involved developing the confidence to enter the water and participate in a swimming lesson; for others, it involved developing their swimming strokes, stamina and water-safety skills.
Within just two weeks, we were able to celebrate a wide range of individual achievements. The intensive nature of the programme allowed pupils to experience regular, consistent opportunities to practise and develop their skills, resulting in clear progress and increased confidence in the water.
The KS2 six-day provision group also attended an overnight residential at a local outdoor-activity centre. The residential was a significant highlight of the year for both pupils and staff.
The experience provided valuable opportunities for pupils to develop independence, resilience, teamwork and confidence while experiencing situations outside their normal routines. Pupils were supported to manage a range of challenges, including trying unfamiliar foods, coping with changes to routine, building relationships with unfamiliar staff, eating in a busy dining environment, staying away from home for the first time and managing aspects of their own self-care.
The residential also enabled staff to identify barriers that may not otherwise have been apparent within the school environment. These included fear of heights, limited resilience, difficulties with teamwork and anxiety around trying unfamiliar activities.
Despite these challenges, every pupil achieved more than they initially believed possible. All pupils returned with a strong sense of achievement and increased confidence in their own abilities.
The KS2 six-day provision group also participated in a bespoke outdoor-adventure caving session delivered by Arthog Outreach. Due to the size of the group and the expertise of the specialist staff, the activity was adapted to enable all pupils, regardless of their individual additional needs, to participate successfully.
Once again, pupils were supported to overcome individual barriers, try a new physical challenge and develop confidence and resilience. The session provided every pupil with a genuine sense of achievement and the opportunity to experience success in an unfamiliar environment.
SWIMMING AND WATER SAFETY
During 2025/2026, we provided an intensive two-week swimming programme for our primary pupils.
There were three Year 6 pupils on roll during the programme. Following the intervention, 100% of these Year 6 pupils could swim at least 25 metres, use multiple strokes and perform safe self-rescue.
This represents a significant achievement and demonstrates the positive impact of providing an intensive, accessible swimming programme tailored to the needs of our pupils.
2026/2027 PLANNED PROVISION
For 2026/2027, TMBSS Primary anticipates receiving £5,000 of PE and Sport Premium funding.
We plan to use the funding to continue providing high-quality physical and outdoor experiences for our pupils.
The intensive two-week swimming programme will be offered again, this time during the Autumn term. The KS2 six-day provision group will also access a range of outdoor-adventure activities designed to develop physical skills, confidence, resilience, teamwork and independence.
SUSTAINABILITY
The experiences funded through the PE and Sport Premium contribute to longer-term improvements in pupils' confidence, physical skills, resilience and willingness to participate in new activities.
Staff also gain a greater understanding of individual pupils' strengths, barriers and support needs through observing them in different physical and outdoor environments. This knowledge can then be used to support pupils' continued development within school and future physical-activity opportunities.
Our aim is to continue providing a broad range of inclusive physical and sporting experiences so that every pupil has the opportunity to experience success, develop new skills and discover activities that they enjoy.
