Sunny with a chance of Smarties

What is the chance all the Smarties will be eaten? A Mathematical problem to be solved!

KEY STAGE 4 students at Bridgnorth Centre began their study of Probability by opening a few boxes of Smarties.  Having previously used hexagonal tubes to explore tessellation, this time their first task was to count the Smarties in each box and sort them into colours.  Amazed at the inconsistencies, they then looked at the probability of picking a certain colour from a box, before considering more complex ideas about chance.  Needless to say, nearly all of the ‘materials’ used in the lesson had gone before it was time to write it all up…!
